Senate Democrats Release “Climate Roadmap”

On August 25, 2020, U.S. Senate Democrats released a “climate roadmap” detailing their legislative goals if the November elections give the party a majority in the Senate. The report, provided by the Senate Democrats’ Special Committee on the Climate Crisis, sets out goals to achieve net-zero carbon emissions, globally, by 2050, such as promoting the use of renewable generation, electrified vehicles, and low-emission cement and steel. The report also sets goals to increase federal spending on climate action to 2 percent of the gross domestic product annually, focus at least 40 percent of the benefits from federal spending on communities of color and low-income or disadvantaged communities, and create at least 10 million new jobs. The report follows close in time with a similar plan from House Democrats, signaling that climate change remains a key issue for Democrats that could rise to the fore if the elections grant them victories in Congress and the White House.
