Massachusetts Regulators Open Investigation Into Natural Gas Industry
On October 29, 2020, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Public Utilities (DUP), announced an investigation into natural gas distribution companies in connection with the State’s goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. As part of its investigation, the DUP anticipates seeking input from utility operators and stakeholders regarding the “evolution of the gas distribution industry.” Although the DUP plans to analyze each local distribution company individually, it directed the companies to jointly identify a consultant who can help identify the companies’ role in achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
